The Catalyst of Change

Millions swear by it and even more can only hope to find it someday. More songs have been written about it, many books have tried to describe it, and reality shows have been built around it – a verb that has become so elusive that believing in it takes only the strongest of people. It breaks down and builds up the very fabric of humanity. Love, the most special experience we are only so lucky to encounter, seems so far away these days.

We live in a world where we care more about how we can make our own self happy than anyone else. Everyday people go hungry, people feel alone, people are abused, and people are betrayed.  So when did the one thing that is free to give become so pricey? While it has been tarnished by our own greed, it is the only thing that has the power to change people’s lives. Even the most hopeless situations are no match to its ability to bring things around.

I truly believe we all have a duty to practice love.  It’s not about figuring out whether someone deserves it or not, because we were first loved – even though we were not worthy. Sometimes we get confused on our roles, and instead find ourselves passing judgments on others. However, we have no authority because there is only one capable of striking the court mallet. We are only to love just as we too have been loved, and when we do the world can’t stay the same anymore.

Tick Tock, Watch the Clock

There are lots of ways people approach life. There are the people that exude lots of care,  little care, and then of course those that don’t care very much at all. The amount of care we extend to the things we do is usually based on our personalities, environment and circumstance. Sometimes we get too busy and don’t have the luxury of expending the energy is takes to complete the task before us with excellence. We in turn settle for just the bare minimum to get the job done.  I mean, in terms of reality, time is our highest commodity. It is something we can neither buy nor sell, but rather something we only have the pleasure to spend.

So the question is, how do we distinguish the things we should devote the most time to? Is it okay to sacrifice quality in exchange for quantity? Herein lies the struggle we have all encountered at some point in our lives. As much as I wish there was a calculated equation that could give us the answer, I have yet to come across such a solution.

However, maybe it’s not what we should devote the most time to, but rather how we should approach the things we do have to do. I have learned that the greatest way to free up time is to do all that we do the very best we possibly can.  So many times, it’s the corners we cut that cost us the most time in the end.  It’s either you that find yourself redoing something you’ve already done, wasting time; or it’s that feeling of knowing you could have done better, wasting energy.  As far as I see it, if you commit to doing something, it should be something you fully intend to complete in the fullest regard for excellence. It’s not to say that we have to be perfect in all that we do, because I know sometimes life happens. If we try our best though, we can almost always be ensured good results. For it’s only when we begin to pursue excellence that quantity no longer is a question, because the quality we find is worth far more.

Yes, No, Maybe So?

I wonder how much easier it would be if we considered all the hardships we face a battle we have to win? I guess probably not much, because when we are in bondage to something, nothing seems like it can make it any better. The physical weight of what we carry is totally and utterly unsurpassable, or at least in the moment it feels like there is no way out. The hopelessness I have found can be so great that many people give up trying.

I feel like addictions have generally been stigmatized as being a negative thing.  When you think “addict” I’m sure the first thing that pops in your mind is of course the strung out drug enthusiast attending rehab. Oh then there’s the people that watch porn, and don’t forget the people that smoke. I could continue but I think you get the point. However, not all addictions are so blatantly obvious nor all of them bad.

I believe there are all things we struggle with in our lives, because face it, we were born into a compromised world. I think half the battle is recognizing the bondage we are stuck in and the other half comes in creating an atmosphere to overcome.  It’s about a good plan, a system of support, and determination to press forward even after you’ve messed up. Ultimately, we are slaves to the things we can’t say no to. That becomes a scary thought for the people like me that value control so much. However, once you experience the first time of walking away, saying no starts becoming a piece of cake. It then is just about learning the good things you can instead say “yes” too.

This is a cool song that fits really well with what we’re talking about.
